Everybody knows her as being a nurse, but before she rose to fame she too was a mathematician here in Oxford. Her pioneering of statistical analysis in recording mortality in the battlefield hospitals that led to the vast improvements that were to come later. Her tutor was J J Sylvester (from Merton) later became Savilian Professor of Geometry. She discussed the possibility with her friend Benjamin Jowett, Master of Balliol College, of endowing a Professorship of Statistics which would be mainly concerned with the application of statistics to social problems.
